HOW A LINK IS PROVED

Every core gets a trace

An OTDR fires light down the fibre and reads what comes back — splices, bends and breaks all show up as events on a graph. It's how we prove a link is good, and how we find the fault when it isn't.

WHO WE WORK FOR

Most of our work comes from other trades

If you're an electrician or an M&E contractor with fibre on the drawing and nobody to terminate it, that's exactly the call we want. We turn up in our own van, work to your programme, and stay out of the rest of your job.

Electrical contractors M&E and main contractors Schools & academies NHS & care estates Facilities teams Data & security installers

You speak to the man on the tools

Whoever quotes your job turns up to do it. Two engineers, no account managers in between.

Based Norwich, working UK-wide

Local enough for East Anglia at short notice, mobile enough to follow a contractor anywhere on programme.

Nothing leaves untested

Traces and loss results on every core, issued as a certificate pack — standard, not an extra.

ON THE TOOLS

Two engineers, one standard

We set AP Communications up in Norwich in 2023 because we were tired of watching good installs let down by rushed terminations. The A and the P are Andy and Pete — and one of us will be on your job.

SERVICES

Fibre optic cabling services

Supply and install, or terminate and test what's already in. New builds, refurbs, live estates and construction sites — and we're happy to be the fibre half of somebody else's contract.

01 — INSTALLATION

Supply and install

We install to the spec on the drawing: PVC-sleeved where cost is the driver, low-smoke zero-halogen where compliance is, and steel-wire armoured for direct burial, ducting and external runs between buildings.

OS2 singlemode and OM3/OM4 multimode
Internal, external, riser and inter-building runs
Tray, basket, trunking and conduit containment
Duct rodding, roping and blown-fibre routes
02 — SPLICING & TERMINATION

Terminate, test, connect

Whether we installed the cable, supplied it for your electricians to pull, or you've got unterminated tails coiled in a cupboard — we'll terminate it, test it and connect your kit. Core-alignment fusion splicing, every time, whatever fibre you've got.

Pigtail splicing into trays, panels and enclosures
LC, SC, ST and MTP/MPO connectors
Patch panels, breakout boxes and wall outlets
Labelling and records to your cable schedule
03 — TESTING

OTDR & insertion loss

Every core tested for signal integrity and loss, bi-directional where the spec calls for it, with a full results pack for the client or the consultant.

04 — CERTIFICATION

Documentation

Test certificates, trace files, as-installed schedules and labelling records — the paperwork that gets a fibre install signed off first time.

05 — MAINTENANCE

Ongoing support

Adds, moves and changes on estates we know, plus a called-off repair service for facilities teams who'd rather have a number than a procurement exercise.

EMERGENCY FIBRE REPAIR

Fibre down? Ring the engineer.

A cut cable stops a site, a school or a shift. Our on-call phone goes straight to Andy or Pete — not a call centre — and in most cases we can locate the break, splice in a new section and hand the link back tested the same day.

STEP 01

You call

Tell us where the site is, what's gone dark and what access looks like. We'll say yes or no on the phone.

STEP 02

We locate it

An OTDR trace from either end puts the break to within a metre or so, so nobody digs up the wrong stretch.

STEP 03

We splice it

A new section goes in between two joints, in a closure rated for where it sits — pit, duct, wall or tray.

STEP 04

You get paperwork

Link retested, results issued, and a note of what we found — useful when someone asks who pays.

Have this ready when you ring

It saves an hour on site and gets you a firmer answer on timing.

Site address and postcode, plus who lets us in
What the cable feeds, and what's stopped working
Fibre type and core count, if you know it
Roughly where the damage is — plant room, car park, duct
Whether the area is safe to work in, and any permits needed
ABOUT

The A and the P are Andy and Pete.

Two fibre engineers who got tired of watching good installs let down by rushed terminations. We set AP Communications up in Norwich in 2023 to do one thing properly: get fibre in, spliced, tested and documented so it works for the next twenty years.

Andy Hillyer

DIRECTOR · FIBRE ENGINEER

[Andy's background — years in the trade, where he trained, the jobs he's proudest of. Two or three sentences in his own words works better than a CV.]

Pete Whitbread

DIRECTOR · FIBRE ENGINEER

[Pete's background — same again. If one of you handles quoting and the other testing, say so; contractors like knowing who to ring for what.]

Two engineers, not a call centre

The person who quotes your job is the person who turns up to do it. Nothing gets lost between the office and the site.

We stay in our lane

We're a fibre subcontractor by choice. We won't quote around you for the rest of the contract, and we're happy to be invisible on your paperwork.

Tested or it isn't finished

No link leaves us untested. Every job comes with traces and certificates, whether the spec asked for them or not.
